MCAT Flashcards Built From The Material You Actually Study

You have months of Kaplan books, UWorld explanations, and Anking cards. Ellie turns all of it into a focused MCAT deck without you writing a single card by hand.

The MCAT covers four sections — Chemical and Physical Foundations, Biological and Biochemical Foundations, Psychological/Social/Biological Foundations of Behavior, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS). Most premeds end up drowning in resources: Kaplan or Berkeley Review books, UWorld question banks, Anking's MCAT deck, plus their own class notes. The problem is not resources. It is turning what you just read into cards you will actually retain.

Ellie generates MCAT flashcards directly from the PDFs and notes you already have. Drop in a chapter of Kaplan Biochem or the amino acids summary you wrote after a UWorld block, and Ellie produces atomic Q/A cards, discrete-fact prompts for enzymes and pathways, and cloze deletions for numeric ranges. It does the tedious card-authoring so you spend your hours on active recall and full-length practice.

Which MCAT sections benefit most from flashcards?

Content-heavy sections benefit the most. Biological and Biochemical Foundations is roughly one third biochemistry — 20 amino acids with three-letter codes, side chains, pI values, glycolysis intermediates, the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid metabolism. All of that is pure recall. Psychological/Social/Biological Foundations of Behavior is even more recall-heavy: theorists (Piaget, Erikson, Vygotsky), classical vs operant conditioning terminology, and social-psych schools.

Chemical and Physical Foundations rewards cards for equations, common unit conversions, functional group reactivity, and lab-technique specifics (IR peaks, NMR ppm ranges). CARS is the exception — do not make CARS flashcards. Practice CARS with full passages instead.

Can Ellie import an Anking MCAT deck?

Yes. Export your Anking or personal Anki deck as .apkg or .csv and Ellie imports it as an editable deck. Reviews stay on Ellie's spaced-repetition schedule, and you can add AI-generated cards to fill gaps Anking misses in your school-specific material.

How to structure a 3-month MCAT flashcard plan

Weeks 1–6 are content review. Load one subject at a time — Biochem, then Bio, then Gen Chem, then Orgo, then Physics, then Psych/Soc. After each Kaplan/BR chapter, drop the notes into Ellie and generate 40–80 cards. Add them the same day so spaced repetition kicks in early.

Weeks 7–10 are UWorld. After every 40-question block, dump your error log into Ellie and let it generate cards from the explanations you flagged. This is where flashcards translate into score gains.

Weeks 11–12 are full-length AAMC practice. Freeze new cards. Only review, and focus on CARS and applied reasoning.

MCAT topics Ellie generates strong cards for

The generator handles pathway-style content well because the underlying model has been prompted to atomize multi-step processes into individual cards.

  • Amino acids (structure, three-letter code, pKa, classification)
  • Glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, TCA cycle, electron transport chain
  • Enzyme kinetics: Km, Vmax, competitive vs non-competitive inhibition
  • Signal transduction (GPCR, RTK, JAK/STAT pathways)
  • Neuroscience: neurotransmitters, brain regions, action potential steps
  • Psychology: Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, Freud, learning theories
  • Sociology: theoretical perspectives, demographic transition, health disparities
  • Physics equations by chapter (kinematics, thermodynamics, electricity, waves)

Frequently asked questions

Is Ellie a replacement for the Anking MCAT deck?

Ellie complements Anking rather than replacing it outright. Anking is comprehensive and community-vetted, so most students keep it as the base. Ellie is where you build the extra cards Anking doesn't cover — your school's specific micro-anatomy lab list, cards from a UWorld block, or cards from a Reddit-recommended chapter Anking tagged lightly. Import Anking, add Ellie cards, review both from one queue.

Can I generate MCAT flashcards from a PDF of Kaplan or Berkeley Review?

Yes. Upload the chapter as a PDF and Ellie extracts the text, chunks it by heading, and generates cards per section. You can pick card style per chapter — basic Q/A for facts, cloze for equations and numeric ranges, and image occlusion for diagrams like the nephron or the cardiac cycle.

How many MCAT flashcards do I actually need?

Between 4,000 and 8,000 cards is typical for a full content pass. Anking's MCAT deck is around 6,000 cards. Do not aim for a number — aim for coverage of every AAMC content outline topic. Track mature-card percentage rather than card count. If you are seeing 250–400 reviews a day comfortably by month two, you are on pace.

Does Ellie work for CARS?

No, and you shouldn't want it to. CARS tests reading comprehension under time pressure, not recall. Flashcards do not help CARS scores. Use Ellie for the content-heavy sections and save 60–90 minutes daily for CARS passages from the AAMC Question Pack and full-lengths.

How is Ellie different from Quizlet MCAT decks?

Quizlet MCAT decks are user-generated and quality varies wildly — some are excellent, most are outdated, and many mix Step 1 content with MCAT content. Ellie generates cards from your own current source material, so the deck reflects what you're actually studying. You can still search Ellie's public deck library if you want a starting point.
