Import Your Quizlet Sets Into Ellie
Quizlet locked spaced repetition behind Quizlet Plus in 2024. Here's how to export your sets and move them into Ellie without retyping a single card.
If you started building Quizlet sets before Quizlet moved Learn mode behind the Plus paywall, you have a library you don't want to lose. The good news: Quizlet still lets you export any set you own as a text or spreadsheet-compatible file. The catch: the export is buried in the desktop UI, and the format is not obvious.
This page walks through the full migration: exporting a set from Quizlet, cleaning up the format, importing into Ellie, and getting spaced-repetition review on top of your existing cards. Total time for a single set is about two minutes.
Step 1 — Export a set from Quizlet
Open Quizlet on desktop (this option does not exist in the mobile app). Go to the set you want to export, click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to the title, and choose 'Export.' Quizlet gives you two custom separators to configure: a term/definition separator (default is Tab) and a row separator (default is New line).
Leave the defaults. Click 'Copy Text' — Quizlet does not download a file, it copies the export to your clipboard. Paste that into a new .txt file if you want a backup, or paste directly into Ellie's import screen.
Step 2 — Import into Ellie
In Ellie, go to Decks → New Deck → Import. Paste the Quizlet clipboard content. Ellie auto-detects the tab/newline separator that Quizlet uses. Preview the parsed cards; if any lines split incorrectly (usually because a definition contained a tab), fix them in the preview pane.
Name the deck, pick a subject tag, and confirm. Ellie schedules every card as a new card and starts the spaced-repetition queue on your next review session.
Step 3 — Fix formatting issues
Common issues after a Quizlet export:
- Images do not transfer. Quizlet exports text only. Re-add images after import.
- Rich text formatting (bold, italics) becomes plain text. Ellie's editor will let you re-apply it.
- Sets with more than 500 cards may hit clipboard limits — export in halves.
- Special characters (Greek letters, accented vowels) transfer correctly if you export from desktop; the mobile clipboard sometimes strips them.
Bulk-migrating your whole Quizlet library
If you have 20 or more sets, exporting one at a time is painful. Ellie's bulk import supports pasting multiple sets separated by a marker line. Prefix each set with `### SET: your-set-title` on its own line and paste them all at once. Ellie will create one deck per set with the specified name.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a Quizlet set someone else made?
You can only export sets you own or that are public. For public sets, Quizlet still shows the Export option under the three-dot menu. Do not scrape Quizlet or bulk-download sets you don't own — that violates their terms of service and can get the source account banned.
Do I lose my Quizlet learning progress when I migrate?
Yes, and there is no clean way around it. Quizlet's Learn mode progress is stored internally and is not part of the export. Every card starts as a new card in Ellie. In practice this reset is not costly — reviewing familiar cards on Ellie's spaced-repetition schedule for a few days gets you to the same retention state.
Can I import a Quizlet set directly into an Anki deck?
Yes, but it takes more steps. Export from Quizlet as tab-separated text, save as a .txt file, then use Anki's File → Import and map the fields. Formatting is often lost. Many students find it easier to import into Ellie (which handles formatting cleanly) and then export from Ellie to .apkg for Anki.
How is Ellie different from Quizlet after import?
Spaced repetition is free — Ellie schedules reviews on an FSRS-compatible algorithm without a paywall. AI card generation is built in, so you can add new cards from a PDF or notes without retyping. The UI is designed around active recall study rather than around games like Match or Blast.
Will my Quizlet flashcards still be there if I migrate?
Yes. Exporting from Quizlet does not delete anything. Your Quizlet account, sets, and folders remain untouched. Many students keep Quizlet as an archive for a few months during the switch and delete it once they're confident everything is on Ellie.
