Mandarin Chinese is the world's most-spoken native language, with roughly 900 million native speakers. It is a Category IV language per FSI — about 2,200 classroom hours to professional working proficiency. The three memory tasks that make it hard for English speakers: tones (four plus neutral), characters (simplified in mainland China, traditional in Taiwan and Hong Kong), and Hànyǔ Pīnyīn (the romanization system used to teach and type Mandarin).
Ellie handles all three. Character decks include stroke order, radical breakdown, pinyin with tone marks, and example words. Vocabulary decks map to HSK levels 1 through 6. Tone drilling is a separate small deck that pays off enormously — most learners undertrain tones and pay for it later.
Tones first, always
Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral tone. Same syllable, different tone = different word (mā mother, má hemp, mǎ horse, mà scold). Learners who skip tone drilling in the first month develop tone-deaf habits that take years to fix.
Characters — simplified or traditional?
Simplified is used in mainland China and Singapore; traditional in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and most overseas Chinese communities. Simplified is the default for HSK. Start there and add traditional variants later if needed.
HSK levels
The Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì is China's standardized Mandarin test. Ellie ships pre-built decks aligned to each HSK vocabulary list.

Frequently asked questions
How long to HSK 3?
About 12 months of consistent daily practice (30–60 minutes/day). Faster with immersion.
Do I need to write characters by hand?
For HSK 1–3, useful for building character memory. Past HSK 4, typing (pinyin input) dominates in real use. Adjust based on your goal.
Is pinyin enough for reading?
No. All adult Chinese content uses characters. Pinyin is a teaching aid and input method, not a reading system.
What about the new HSK 3.0?
HSK 3.0 (announced 2021) expands to nine levels and adds handwriting and speaking components. The classic six-level HSK is still what most textbooks and courses target as of 2026.
Can I mine from Chinese dramas?
Yes. Paste subtitles, Ellie extracts new characters and words with the sentence as context. Traditional and simplified characters both work.
