How to check an Anki multiline import without splitting answers

A long answer may occupy several visible lines while belonging to one record. Verify the boundaries and the resulting question before treating every new line as another card.

Anki multiline import failures often look like missing definitions, extra notes, or answers split into fragments. The underlying question is which line breaks belong inside a field and which separate records. A text viewer’s line count is not a reliable substitute for knowing how many source records you intended to create.

This workflow uses a fictional literature-course sheet containing a term, a short explanation, and a two-line example. The examples are about preserving structure, not recommending that every long passage become a flashcard. First make the file faithfully represent the intended records; then inspect whether the resulting questions are worth reviewing.

How many records did you intend to create?

Create a record ledger from the source table before exporting. Give each sample row a short recognizable label and write its expected fields. Include a row with a deliberate internal line break and one without. Count the source records, not the number of displayed lines after export. If you cannot explain which fragments belong together, return to the source and clarify the table before adjusting an import option. The software cannot infer the educational boundary you have not defined.

In the fictional literature sheet, one term has a definition followed by an example on the next line of the same cell. A second term starts a new row. The ledger distinguishes those two events. Keep that expectation visible while inspecting the file and preview. If a definition fragment becomes a new front, you have a concrete failed boundary to investigate. This is more informative than noticing that the final total is unexpectedly large, because several different record defects can produce the same count.

  • Record count: count intended source rows independently of visible text lines.
  • Field meaning: label which line breaks belong inside each answer.

Which multiline representation should you test?

The Anki text-import manual documents quoted multiline fields and HTML line breaks, including a special consideration for cloze content spanning lines. Choose a documented representation that fits your actual note type. Do not combine several representations in a single test without a reason. Preserve a copy of the original export so you can compare what changed. The objective is not to produce the shortest file; it is to make the record and field boundaries unambiguous to the receiving workflow.

Test a single long answer before the full sheet. Write what should appear on its front and back. Inspect whether punctuation, quotes, and the intended break survive. If the source includes literal markup, keep that separate from formatting interpretation. A line-break repair that causes literal text to disappear creates a different content defect. The test should therefore include the actual kinds of text in the file, not just a harmless example that avoids every difficult character. Use the manual for mechanics and the source ledger for meaning.

How do quotes and separators complicate the boundary?

A field may contain the same character used to separate columns. A quoted example can also contain quotation marks that need appropriate representation in the exported format. Use the spreadsheet’s export behavior and the documented text-file rules rather than inserting ad hoc punctuation until a preview looks plausible. Inspect the raw text around the exact failed record. The relevant evidence may be one opening quote or separator, not the overall appearance of the file.

In the literature sample, a definition includes a quoted phrase and a line break. The learner compares the source cell with the raw export, then checks how the destination interprets that row. They leave the field map unchanged while correcting the boundary representation. This isolates the problem. If they simultaneously change the delimiter, target note type, and formatting option, a later success becomes hard to reproduce. Record the smallest confirmed change and apply it to a fresh export from the untouched source rather than manually patching many uncertain fragments in the only copy.

What should the import preview and stored note show?

Compare every sample record with the ledger. The front should contain the intended question, the back should contain the complete answer, and optional source fields should remain aligned. Look for an answer fragment appearing as a new question, empty notes introduced between records, and source references shifted into another field. A normal-looking first row does not validate a later quoted multiline row. Start with the sample most likely to expose the problem.

After importing the sample, inspect the stored fields and actual generated prompts. A preview can reveal parsing, while an actual review reveals whether the template displays the content sensibly. In the fictional sheet, the intended two-line example remains complete but the answer is too long for quick grading. That is a question-design problem, not a record-boundary failure. Keep the two diagnoses separate. Fixing the file ensures the source survived; editing the question ensures the learner knows what must be recalled. Both checks are needed before a technically successful transfer becomes useful study material.

Check the first record after the difficult multiline example as well as the example itself. A boundary defect can shift the next row even when the long answer appears mostly intact. In the literature sheet, verify that the following term still owns its definition and source reference. This neighboring-row test catches errors that a screenshot of the long answer alone would miss, and it gives the repair a more precise acceptance condition.

When should a multiline answer become several questions?

List the independent claims in the imported answer. If the question asks for a term, an explanation, two exceptions, and an example, a single rating may hide mixed success. Split independent retrieval tasks while keeping source context. If the lines form one tightly connected explanation, preserve the relationship and define a clear acceptance criterion. Do not split solely because the answer crosses a visual line. Layout is not the same as conceptual structure.

For the literature example, the definition can be a compact card while applying the concept to a fresh passage becomes a separate task. The quoted example can remain supporting explanation rather than required recital. The learner writes what a correct response must include and what is optional. Then they test the front with the answer hidden. If the prompt still relies on remembering its spreadsheet position, rewrite it. A multiline import can preserve every character and still create an overloaded or vague question; the editorial pass prevents file fidelity from being mistaken for instructional quality.

How do you make the next export reproducible?

Keep the source table, tested export choices, sample ledger, and a recovery copy of the collection. Add a new edge case to the sample whenever the source introduces a different row shape. For example, a later chapter may add both quoted dialogue and internal breaks to a field that previously contained plain definitions. A past successful import did not test that new structure. Reuse the method, not an assumption that the file extension guarantees identical content.

If you evaluate Elly using CSV, TSV, or TXT, inspect multiline behavior independently at its receiving stage. Anki’s parsing and formatting choices are not a guarantee about another workflow. Text transfer also does not preserve native Anki templates, media, scheduling, or review history. Keep the original collection and compare a permitted source-based question task on a small sample. Accept the transfer only when the records remain complete, the field meanings are correct, and the resulting questions agree with the source. A generic upload-success message does not establish those conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Why did one long answer become several Anki notes?

The file may have represented an internal line break as a record boundary. Compare the raw export with a ledger of intended source rows. Use the multiline representation documented for your note type and test a single difficult record. Keep mapping choices stable while diagnosing the boundary so a repair is explainable and reproducible.

Should I remove every line break before importing?

Only if doing so preserves the intended meaning and structure. Some breaks are presentation, while others separate examples or parts of an explanation. Test the actual task after any simplification. Removing breaks can hide a parsing problem without improving an overloaded answer, so verify both record integrity and question design.

Can I trust a text editor line count as the number of notes?

No. A field can contain an intended internal break, so visible lines and source records need not match. Count the intended records in the source table and inspect a representative sample. Use that ledger to diagnose extra notes, missing fragments, and misaligned fields rather than relying on one final number.

What should I test if the answer contains quotes and newlines?

Include that exact combination in a small sample. Inspect raw quoting, separators, the import preview, stored fields, and the actual generated prompt. A sample containing only plain words does not test the difficult row. Preserve the original source and change one representation choice at a time so the successful repair can be repeated.

Does multiline content transfer identically from Anki to Elly?

Do not assume identical parsing or formatting. Test a supported CSV, TSV, or TXT sample in the receiving workflow and compare record boundaries and meaning. Keep the native Anki collection because text import does not preserve templates, media, scheduling, or review history. Judge the resulting question against the same permitted source.
