Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology (14th edition) is the standard reference physiology text used in medical schools worldwide. The most effective workflow: use BRS as the primary deck source, and consult Guyton when a BRS statement doesn't make sense. Then generate a Guyton explanation card for that mechanism. Over a full prep cycle, you accumulate 50–80 Guyton-source clarification cards that plug the mechanistic holes in your BRS deck.
Cardiovascular regulation: the 4-chapter core
Chapters 18–21 of Guyton cover arterial pressure regulation, hypertension mechanisms, cardiac failure, and heart sounds. USMLE Step 1 cardiology questions frequently test integrated regulation — what happens to heart rate, stroke volume, and total peripheral resistance after hemorrhage, heart failure, or a beta-blocker dose. Should I read Guyton or BRS Physiology for USMLE Step 1?
BRS Physiology first, always. BRS is written for board review — concise, organized by system, practice questions included. Read Guyton only when BRS leaves a mechanistic gap you need to resolve. Guyton is the backup, not the primary source.
Which edition of Guyton should I use?
The 14th edition (2021) is current. Major updates include expanded coverage of immunophysiology and updated cardiovascular data. Older editions (12th, 13th) cover the same core physiology with minor numerical differences.
How many Guyton cards should I generate per chapter?
