UPCAT Flashcards for the Four Admission Test Subtests

The UP Office of Admissions lists four subtests: Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension, Science, and Mathematics. The two language-centered subtests use both English and Filipino. That bilingual design is easy to underestimate if most of your school review material is organized only by subject rather than by the language in which a question is asked.

Create separate tags for each subtest and another tag for the source grade or class. This makes weak areas visible. If a Mathematics card depends on a Grade 9 algebra rule, label it accordingly; if a Science item mixes graph reading with chemistry, keep both tags. Use the four-subtest structure as the checklist, then let practice errors decide where review time grows.

Avoid cards that ask for a translation with no sentence. Language Proficiency and Reading Comprehension depend on meaning in context. Put a short English or Filipino sentence on the front, ask which word or construction fits, and explain the clue on the back. For near-synonyms, contrast them in two sentences rather than listing definitions.

For reading practice, keep the passage outside the flashcard deck. After answering a passage, make a card only for the strategy you missed: locating the claim supported by a paragraph, separating the author's view from a quoted speaker, or recognizing a transition that changes direction. This preserves the reasoning task instead of reducing reading to vocabulary alone.

Use cards for foundations that should be automatic: formulas with their units, algebraic identities, geometry relationships, scientific definitions, common graph patterns, and cause-and-effect links. Prompt yourself to use the fact. A card asking how a graph changes after a variable doubles is stronger than one asking you to recite a definition word for word.

Do not turn every solved problem into a card. Save full problems for timed sets. After each set, write a one-line diagnosis: missing concept, calculation slip, misread condition, or time-management error. Generate cards only for the first category and durable reminders for repeated process errors. That keeps the queue small enough to review every day.

Choose one topic from Grades 8–11 material, review the original lesson, and paste only your summary into Ellie. Generate a short deck, check every answer against the source, then complete related practice without looking at the cards. The next day, review the deck before attempting a mixed set. This sequence alternates learning, retrieval, and application.

Once a week, inspect tags rather than total card count. A large biology deck and an empty Filipino grammar deck may signal avoidance, not readiness. Rebalance the next week's source material around the least-covered subtest. Because the official admission score also incorporates school grades, this workflow should support current coursework rather than displace it.

Keep full reading passages, long computations, and complete mock exams in a timed practice block. The official UPCAT information says test administration lasts about five hours and prohibits calculating devices, so stamina and manual calculation matter. A sequence of ten-second cards cannot reproduce that demand.

Campus and degree-program choices also require separate attention. UP ranks applicants for campuses and programs using admission indicators, quotas, and cutoffs, and some programs require a second screening.
