Migrate Your RemNote Flashcards Into Ellie
RemNote's notes-and-flashcards hybrid is powerful but the flashcard scheduler is the weakest part of the app. Here's how to keep your notes and get better review in Ellie.
RemNote combines a hierarchical outliner (rems) with flashcards generated from the same text. That is a great writing experience but the spaced-repetition scheduling in RemNote is less refined than mature Anki-style implementations. If your rem library has grown past a few thousand cards and you're seeing scheduling drift, migration is a reasonable move.

Step 1 — Export from RemNote
RemNote supports two export formats for flashcards: CSV and JSON. Go to Settings → Data → Export. Choose 'Flashcards as CSV' for a flat list, or 'Full workspace as JSON' if you also want rem hierarchy metadata for re-tagging on the Ellie side.
The CSV export includes: card front, card back, card type (basic or cloze), and rem path (the outline breadcrumb). Cloze deletions export with RemNote's cloze markers intact.
Step 2 — Import into Ellie
In Ellie, go to Decks → New Deck → Import → CSV. Upload the RemNote CSV. Ellie auto-detects the card type column and preserves cloze markers, converting RemNote's cloze syntax to Ellie's format at import time.
The rem path column maps to Ellie tags automatically. A rem at 'Medical School / Cardiology / Arrhythmias' becomes tags: medical-school, cardiology, arrhythmias. You can search or filter by any of them post-import.
Step 3 — Handle the hierarchy trade-off
RemNote's core feature is that flashcards live inside your notes. Ellie separates notes from decks. During migration you have two options: keep the RemNote outline as tags only (fast, loses visual hierarchy), or paste the outline into Ellie's Notes editor (slower, preserves everything).
For 90% of migrating users, tags are enough. Search finds any card by its outline path, and the Notes → Decks link lets you re-attach a note to a deck if you want to review while reading.

Frequently asked questions
Are cloze deletions preserved?
Yes. RemNote uses {{c1::text}} syntax; Ellie uses the same. Cards with multiple cloze holes import as multi-cloze cards. Cards with cloze hints ({{c1::text::hint}}) preserve the hint text.
Does my review history transfer?
No. RemNote does not export card-level review history in the CSV format. Every card imports as new. Ellie's scheduler will re-learn your accuracy after 5–10 reviews per card.
What about my rems (notes)?
The flashcard CSV does not include full rem content, only the card front and back. If you want to migrate notes too, use the JSON workspace export and paste the outline into Ellie's Notes editor per subject.
Can I keep using RemNote for notes and Ellie for review?
Yes. Many users do exactly this during migration. Export the CSV weekly from RemNote and re-import the new cards into Ellie. Duplicate detection at import time prevents doubles.
Is Ellie's spaced repetition better than RemNote's?
Ellie uses a mature SM-2 variant tuned on millions of reviews. RemNote's algorithm is less battle-tested, especially for large libraries (10k+ cards). Most migrants report smoother interval growth in Ellie.
